1. : a joint formed by making a mating groove in each of the contiguous pieces and inserting a feather in the opening formed when the pieces are butted together
2. : one of a set of joints that are developed by shear and tension in a zone of deformation of the earth's crust (as along a fault) and that resemble in pattern the barbs and shaft of a feather
